Flavorwood consists of natural wood pellets packaged in a can the size of a standard tuna-fish can (volume 9.5 cubic inches or 155.7 cubic centimeters). A small hole is in the lid, allowing just enough oxygen to enter the can to make the pellets char; but not enough oxygen enters the can to let the pellets combust. A user removes the labels from the can and places it under the grill grate, directly on the heat source. Within a few minutes, the pellets heat up and dense smoke emerges from the hole in the top of can. The smoke continues for approximately one hour. When the can starts to smoke, the user places the food on the grill and closes the grill cover. The smoke circulating within the grill cover provides natural smoke flavor to the objects being cooked.
If the object being cooked requires less than a hour of cooking time, the user removes the can from the heat source; the can stops smoking within a few minutes; and it can be reused, usually two or more times.
